Situation

An international bank was exposed to a number of mining and infrastructure projects in a region marked by an escalation of violent extremism and political instability.

Task

The client wanted a risk assessment that went beyond open-source material and generic insights to consider the current regional environment and individual hotspots, context and outlook scenarios.

Action

We worked closely with the client to develop terms of reference to facilitate internal decision-making that would best benefit from our sources across central governments, provincial administrations, military and security organisations, and civil society. This helped deliver an effective working document to answer specific areas of concern with a range of source commentary.

Results

The client was able to take a considered view on the potential outlook for its exposure to risk, and to distinguish between particular local challenges and broader regional trends.
